Over the last several weeks, we have shared with you the stories of many families. Stories of heartache and of triumph. Stories of sadness and of hope. All of these stories were unique and special ... and yet, they were similar. They were the stories of the 1 in 4.
This weekend we will gather downtown for the Anna’s Grace Quarter Marathon. But we aren’t just running. We are running for Anna, for the Freeman babies, for Sweet Baby James, for the Haynes babies, for Simon, for Griffin, and for Corbin. We are running for all the babies whose names will grace the memorial signs along our race courses. We are running for the babies whose families formed teams to honor their little ones and to help other families. We are running for the 1 in 4 – everyone who has ever experienced the loss of a precious baby.
On Sunday morning, we will make our way along the course, putting one foot in front of the other. Always moving forward. It will be difficult for some, easy for others. Some will finish the race quickly while others take longer. But we will all finish – in our own way and in our own time. Then, we will gather together to celebrate and to remember. Each of us holding a special and unique story in our hearts. Each of us moving forward in our grief journey. Sharing a bond that we wish didn’t exist. Part of a group that none of us asked to join.
But in that gathering hope and healing will blossom. Each of us will see that we are not alone. We have each other, after all. We will speak the names of our babies, and we will tell our stories out loud. And we will find comfort among friends.
We are so thankful to everyone who has worked so hard to make this weekend’s event so very special: our sponsors, our Q Crew, our volunteers, our supporters, and our participants. By working together, we will make a big impact on the lives of those who come after us. All the proceeds from the event will benefit the projects of Anna’s Grace Foundation, including our Financial Assistance Program which provides funds for burial and grave markers for sweet babies. Thank you for making it possible for families to focus on healing instead of on expenses.
We hope that each of you will join us this weekend because we’re not just running. We’re running for the 1 in 4.
